紫水晶（Amethyst）因含鐵（Fe）、錳（Mn）等礦物質而形成漂亮的紫色，主要顏色有淡紫色、紫紅、深紅、大紅、深紫、藍紫等，以深紫和大紅為最佳。天然紫晶通常會有天然冰裂紋或白色雲霧雜質。具有寶石價值的紫晶均產在火山岩、偉晶岩、或灰岩、葉岩的晶洞中。
烏拉圭出產的紫水晶被譽為是紫水晶中色調最好的一種，這種紫色非常深，深邃中還略帶著酒紅色的醉人火光，仿佛是希臘傳說中的紫水晶再現。近幾年來也是產量極少而接近停產，所以變得極為稀有，加上品質較優的烏拉圭紫水晶，晶體乾淨，雲霧和冰裂都很少，亦成為高檔珠寶店的鎮店之寶。其辨認特點在於多見其紫色集中於一處，而非均勻分佈與晶石各處。
